Popular Science magazine named Huntsville one of the top 50 of America’s 50 Greenest Cities. Huntsville ranked 18th place and was the highest of any city in the South. It also placed Huntsville ahead of many major cities including New York, Denver and St. Louis. Data was used from the U.S. Census Bureau and National Geographic Society’s Green guide. The cities were chosen in regard to their renewable energy, public transit, recycling and setting aside land for parks and nature preserves. Huntsville was also commended on new green construction projects and its efforts in recycling and land preservation. One project they were commended for was The NASA Child Development Center located on Redstone Arsenal.
Huntsville scored so high in its effects in recycling and land preservation that The Green Gauge, a publication of the Green Resource Center of Alabama recognized Huntsville efforts in making Alabama a greener place to live, work and play.
